Keynote Presentation

Bish Paul, Global Head of DEI Industry Collaboration at Snap Chat

Bish Paul is the Global Head of DEI Industry Collaboration at Snap. He leads the implementation of the Action to Catalyze Tech (ACT) report which will result in collective action on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at an industry level with a coalition of 30+ companies (and growing). He is a scientist, and civil rights advocate whose previous work has straddled legislative advocacy, governmental policy, research analytics, education reform, & community activism. In 2018, he was named National Educator of the Year, and, in 2021, he was featured as a “Local Icon” in the Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement exhibition at the MoPOP museum.

How Computer Science Can Help Save the Environment? Scientists are using computer science (machine learning, artificial intelligence, algorithms, data analytics) to reduce global carbon emissions and generate sources of renewable energy. The panelists will share their educational and career journeys as well as their purpose for mitigating climate change.

Why Cybersecurity? This panel will answer the question “Why cybersecurity?” as they share their journey into cybersecurity, discuss different types of work performed in the field, and identify traits and skills commonly found in cybersecurity professionals.

In this panel, we’ll explore learning resources, networking career path options, and dive into the day-to-day functions of network and systems administrators from a variety of industries.

Dr. Changki Mo, Washington State University

Computer science and engineering skills are pretty powerful when combined. Come and learn about the ways that engineers and computer scientists impact automation and robotics in agriculture, and how computer science and robotics empower specialized functions like machine vision, machine analysis and machine learning, for nuclear waste inspection and vapor monitoring.

Agriculture, Energy and Healthcare are three of the biggest industries in our local economy and data is powering all three. The NCW Tech Alliance will moderate a conversation with Executive Leaders to hear about how technology is shaping their industry, and how your technology and computer science skills are needed at the forefront of this change.

This session is for female-identifying students. Here is your chance to meet women who work in a variety of exciting STEM jobs! The speakers will share about their educational and career journeys, and then you’ll get a chance to ask them questions.

Workshops

Cheri Bortleson, Azure FarmBeats

Participants will learn about FarmBeats for Students and get hands-on experience with sensors, live data streaming, and build their own machine learning model. The program combines an affordable hardware kit with free curriculum and activities designed to give students hands-on experience in applying precision agriculture techniques to food production.

Jacqueline Russell, Microsoft

Microsoft MakeCode is a free, open source platform for creating engaging computer science learning experiences that support a progression path into real-world programming. Students will learn to combine the magic of making with the power of code across a variety of different products.

Nancy Roe, Pacific Northwest National Labs

Recently a notorious hacker has been causing problems and creating chaos by hacking into the power supply, water system and other essential services. We need to stop him or her before another cyberattack on our services. If your team can solve enough clues before the end of the session you can tell us the identity of the notorious hacker AND all get a treat.

Dr. Lois de la Torre, Washington State University

Participants will learn a free web-based program to create, combine, and manipulate 3-D shapes by stacking “block” commands (like Legos) rather than by typing in precise coding syntax. If you love math, computer modeling, programming languages, playing with Legos BlocksCAD, or like 2d sketchup techniques, this is your best option for starting in the 3D object design (coding) and 3D printing world.

This session is for female-identifying students. Meet women STEM professionals and get creative learning how to make devices, websites, and apps easy to use! This workshop covers User Experience (UX) Design fundamentals, including design thinking, design best practices, and accessible design.
