Heathy Futures Alternative to Suspension Curricula

For students who have been caught vaping, or who have expressed a desire to stop vaping, Healthy Futures Alternative to Suspension Curricula, part of Stanford Medicine’s Tobacco Prevention Toolkit, includes four options, each covering:

  • Health Effects
  • Your Brain
  • Messaging
  • Costs

My Healthy Future: A Self-Paced Online Course

  • Student completes independently in 40 – 60 minutes
  • Uses social media-type “posts”
    • Short videos
    • Infographics
    • Short games
    • One four-slide show
  • Instructions are read by a “Healthy Future Ally”
  • Includes information about stress
  • Points out the benefits of problem-solving and meeting challenges
  • Encourages thinking about a quit date
  • Includes an optional section about planning to quit

An adult must follow up with the student within three days.

Students can listen to recordings of some, but not all, of the written material. Anyone assigning this course to a student should make sure that the student can comprehend it.

1-Hour Healthy Futures Curriculum

  • Covers the same content as the Self-Paced Online Course
  • Meant to be supportive and confidential, not punitive
  • Must be taught be a willing facilitator who is
    • Welcoming
    • Empathetic
    • Non-judgmental

2-Hour Healthy Futures Curriculum

  • Same as the 1 – Hour Course, and
    • Allows time for warm up questions prior to each section

4-Hour Healthy Futures Curriculum

  • Same as the 2 – Hour Course, and 
    • Allows time for reflection following each section
