Building Real-World Pathways by Expanding CTE Opportunities for Students

All students deserve access to education that prepares them for the real world, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs play an important role in providing opportunities for students to explore future careers. North Central ESD supports school districts in building and maintaining strong CTE programs. Whether it’s managing compliance, supporting staff, or connecting students with real-world experiences, our team walks alongside districts every step of the way.

CTE Educator Academy – Professional learning for instructors and directors in CTE programs.

The CTE Educator Academy provides practical training for new and experienced CTE instructors and directors. This professional learning series is designed to help school staff understand the rules, processes, and best practices for navigating the complexities of running a CTE program. Upon successful completion of units, instructors can earn needed clock hours.

The Academy covers critical topics such as:

  • Framework development and annual review
  • Grant alignment and budgeting tied to four-year plans
  • Certification pathways and conditional certificate requirements
  • Advisory committee roles and labor market data use
  • Paperwork and compliance (CLNA, POW, ASB, etc.)
  • Career pathway development and state-approved standards

With this training, educators are empowered to create innovative, high-impact programs aligned to industry needs and student interests.

CTE Program Director Cooperative – Providing strategic leadership and program development for school district CTE programs.

The NCESD CTE Program Director Cooperative offers districts leadership and technical assistance to build high-quality, sustainable CTE programs. When districts join the cooperative, they have access to our team of experts who can support everything from strategic planning to compliance and innovation.

Through this cooperative, districts receive help with:

  • Graduation pathway and course planning
  • Budget tracking and enrollment reporting
  • Instructor certification and hiring support
  • Framework development and submission
  • State and federal reporting requirements
  • Grant writing and management (State and Federal)
  • Advisory committee coordination
  • Presentations and updates for school boards

This cooperative helps districts meet requirements and build programs that prepare students for in-demand, living-wage careers while assisting with district graduation pathway development.

CTE Worksite Learning Cooperative: Supporting students with hands-on experience outside the classroom to bridge the gap between school and employment.

Through the CTE Worksite Learning Cooperative, NCESD helps districts offer students hands-on, career-aligned experiences outside the classroom. Worksite learning bridges the gap between education and employment. When districts join the cooperative, NCESD staff help manage student placements, coordinate with employers, and handle required documentation so students can earn credit while gaining hands-on experience.

Through this cooperative, support includes:

  • Facilitating student worksite placements with vetted industry partners
  • Ensuring safety and compliance documentation (parent authorizations, agreements, evaluations)
  • Supporting teachers with grading and credit documentation
  • Leading soft-skills development activities (Resume Builder, Interview Prep, Dress for Success)
  • Tracking student progress toward additional CTE credit and graduation requirements

This program not only builds confidence and career readiness, but it also helps students develop professional networks and gain clarity on their post-high school goals.

Career and Technical Education offers real-world learning that benefits all students. By focusing on practical skills and career readiness, CTE creates pathways that prepare students for both college and the workforce.

NCESD is committed to supporting CTE as an essential part of student success. Whether it’s managing logistics, supporting staff, or creating career pathways, our team partners with districts to make sure CTE programs are sustainable, compliant, and impactful.
